World's Youngest Smoker

Ok wow this really is unbelieveable, but when I googled it and got dozens of sources, it appears true.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/worldnews/article-1195513/Is-worlds-youngest-smoker-Chinese-year-old-pack-day.html

A two-year-old Chinese boy is thought to be the world’s youngest smoker.

Tong Liangliang was taught how to light up by his father, who believed the habit would alleviate pain caused by a hernia.

The toddler now smokes a pack of cigarettes a day and throws a tantrum if he can’t get his fix.

‘The father wasn’t aware of how serious the toddler’s habit became until the child began to increase the number of cigarettes he smoked per day’, China Radio International reported.

Tong received his first cigarette at the age of 18 months in a bid to reduce the discomfort caused by his hernia. The boy’s tender age meant he was too young to have an operation.

  • I mean wouldn't you just stop giving them to him? Let him go through the withdrawals, under dr's care if necessary, but goodness, STOP giving them to him!

  • We have very old reels of film my Grandpa took in WWII while a photographer for the army. It shows little 4 or 5 year old natives of whatever island they were on, smoking cigarettes the GIs gave them. The kids were total natives in loin clothes or naked. This story totally brought back flash backs of those kids.

  • How the heck would cigarette smoke stop hernia pains anyway? And my brother was born with a herniated umbillical site and they operated on it when he was 1 week old. He is in his 40's now, so it's not a new technique that might be unknown in China. Teaching a small child to smoke is totally irresponsible and a horrible parenting choice. I should parents ought to know better even in China.

  • This is super sad, but not entirely uncommon in the states. As a social worker, a friend of mine investigated a family that each morning would give their 2 year old a lit cigarette and a cup of coffee as she watched her cartoons because "it calmed her down and she was easier to deal with."

    People these days are ridiculous.
