Does anyone know the results of cigerette smoking while breast feeding? And what effects does it have?

This is a great article: Check it out! I know it can behard to quit, I quit when I found out I was pregnant with my first and I haven't smoked since. It can be tough but it is so much better for you and the baby if you quit. http://www.kellymom.com/health/lifestyle/smoking.html

"but its better to smoke and BF than formula feed anyday!"

No it's not. When you breastfeed and smoke your baby is getting just as much nicotine as you are. Not really fair considering that you are a grown adult and your baby is still small and developing. I am very pro-breastfeeding, but if someone cannot give up smoking for their baby than they need to formula feed. Formula is much healthier than cigarettes.

Read up on formula honey, and read up on cigarettes smoke in BM, BM is till better

Should a mother who smokes cigarettes breastfeed?

First of all, a mom who can't stop smoking should breastfeed. Breastfeeding provides many immunities that help your baby fight illness and can even help counteract some of the effects of cigarette smoke on your baby: for example, breastfeeding has been shown to decrease the negative effects of cigarette smoke on a baby's lungs. It's definitely better if breastfeeding moms not smoke, but if you can't stop or cut down, then it is better to smoke and breastfeed than to smoke and formula feed.

The more cigarettes that you smoke, the greater the health risks for you and your baby. If you can't stop smoking, or don't want to stop smoking, it's safer for your baby if you cut down on the number of cigarettes that you smoke.

If you are concerned, maybe you should try formula feeding... theres nothing wrong with that. And i do hope than when you are smoking that you are outside. :)

It really is better if you use formula than breastfeed while smoking. I formula fed both my girls and absolutely nothing is wrong with them. Better your chiild not have that nicotine, trust me, thats addicting.

I heard it is better to breastfeed and smoke then formula feed. I quit while pregnant and had no problem quiting but when he was about 3 months old I slowly started smoking again. I nursed him until he was 10 months old. He had awful sleeping issues and while I had read everywhere that is was ok to nurse and smoke (NOT at the same time of course!) I just read recently that it can make it hard for baby to fall asleep. So dont smoke right before you nurse. Looking back I should have never smoked.... I was being selfish and feel like shit for doing it.

I am a surgical nurse. the number one cancer from smoking is BLADDER Cancer! Most people never know they have it until they see blood in their urine. Second hand smoke is just as deadly as first hand smoking.I know it's hard to quit but the baby needs you for the next 40+ years! you don't want someone looking in your bladder every 3 months(if they find it in time). Quit for both your sakes. Lung Cancer is number two and gets all the press because no one talks about bladder cancer when they have it. Sorry if I sound preachy but I think people should be informed and you did ask.
