Chavez: U.S. Is a Threat to Venezuela

CARACAS, Venezuela — President Hugo Chavez says a U.S. general shouldn't be raising concerns that Venezuela is buying arms, and the American commander is wrong to argue there isn't a "conventional military threat in the region."

Chavez says the U.S. is a threat to Venezuela, and that's why his government is strengthening its military.

The comment is aimed at Gen. Douglas Fraser, who took over as commander of U.S. military operations in Latin America and the Caribbean this week. Fraser has questioned an apparent Venezuelan military buildup.

Chavez said Saturday that Fraser should look in a mirror, adding: "General, you're the threat!"

Venezuela has signed deals with Russia to buy more than $4.4 billion worth of arms since 2005.

Wonder how many other countries see us as a threat, and would willingly turn against us should another World War break out.

  • So Sweet, you are saying that President Obama might invade Venezuela? Where did you get this information? I could have sworn he called Hugo Chavez his friend when they were shaking hands on the news.

umm, President Obama wan't president in 2005 which is when Chavez was buying them weapons. and even though we see the vast difference between Obama and Bush, to the world, we act as the USA...who knows WHO will be prez next?????? and we could be back to th epolicies of the last admin. I do not have a problem with a country being ablt to defend themselves, just as I don't have a problem with America being able to protect itself...it's when it involves military offensives that are unprovoked that it gets ugly.

  • Quote from another story about Chavez in Venezuela:

CARACAS, Venezuela — President Hugo Chavez on Tuesday alleged that U.S. intelligence agencies were behind a purported assassination plot that prevented him from visiting El Salvador.

Chavez had planned to attend the inauguration of leftist President Mauricio Funes in the Central American nation on Monday, but said he canceled his trip due to the alleged plot.

"I don't doubt that the intelligence organizations of the United States are behind this," Chavez said, accusing them of plotting with Cuban militant Luis Posada Carriles to murder him.

He said Venezuelan intelligence services have "very precise information" that they were planning to launch rockets at the Cubana de Aviacion plane he was going to travel in.

Officials at the U.S. Embassy in Caracas couldn't be reached for comment. The U.S. State Department has denied similar accusations in the past.

  • Anon, glad to know you support the rights for gun owners to defend themselves. However, who do you think Hugo Chavez has to protect his country from? President Obama is friendly with Chavez, and none of the other South American countries have shown signs of aggression towards him. It's more likely he will be the aggressor, not the other way around.

They started this is 2005...why would the NOT be afraid of the US? We had invaded another country and our relations with Cuba have NOT been friendly to say the least. If you are for gun rights, why aren't you for tHEM being able to defend THEMSELVES?

This is why is was so dangerous to piss off so many allies with the Iraq invasion, that is still causing MORE cracks now that MORE things are coming out as lies to start  a war. (specifically in Britain with the Downing street memo and its newest companion)
