  • Pretty much. People like to thrive off of others misery because it gives them a distraction from their own.

  • There is a saying about misery loving company.........and unfortunately, it is all too true. It is the human condition to yearn for what others have; that nice house, fancy car, handsome husband, talented child.........and most of us can't have all the stuff we see other people getting. So it is easier to look at flaws, faults, mistakes and tragedy and say, "Well, at least my husband didn't cheat on me....poor girl." Because then it makes us feel better, and in some way superior to them.
Or to jump on the bandwagon of mourners for MJ or other famous people because then we are part of a group......we are no longer standing alone. Most who are lined up bawling over him today, wouldn't have paid to see his concert yesterday. Misery is free, you see. We ALL feel the need to belong, whether it is to girl scouts or to the hells angels. The key to true happiness is not having what you want, but wanting what you have. :0)
