  • i agree with okmanders, the verse before it says not to pray the same thing over and over.

Someone should tell Jesus, he prayed the same thing 3 times in the garden of Gethsemane (Matt. 26:44). And what about the angles who pray day and night without ceasing "Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord God Almighty, who was and is and is to come!" (Rev. 4:8) And don't read Psalm 136 which repeast the phrase "For his steadfast love endures for ever" 25 times.

What Matthew 6:7–8 is against is prayers done in VAIN not repeating a prayer.

  • Yes it is, though I couldn't cite the verse for you. The 23rd Psalm is a different prayer, it is the one that begins "The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want..."

  • yes, its the way Jesus said we should pray. i dont think its a "you must pray this way" sorta thing, just more of a "here's an example" since there were some problems with religious leaders praying out in the streets just for acknowledgment.

  • Yes; however it's a guide as to how we should pray, not a verbatim word-for-word prayer.

  • How could the Lord's prayer not be a verbatim word-for-word prayer? It's both a guide and a prayer.
