does anyone know when prayer beads started?

I know many peopel thank of them as a Catholic Rosary but I also have seen Muslim Rosaries. When the custom of praying on beads begin?

  • Not sure. Many Buddhists also have prayer beads, similar to a rosary, used in chanting meditation. They are called malas.

  • no clue. im a Protestant & i had some in middle school & high school. i wore them around my wrist & it was really more of a reminder to ask for God's help than a religiously sanctioned thing. they were pretty popular at my schools too...

  • Before prayer beads people would have used fingers, pebbles, knotted cords, stringsof threads, etc as a way of counting when thy want to recite a specific number of prayers. So the use of prayer beads probably developed in different cultures independently at different times.
