  • Yep, common denominator. I'd also combine the mixed numbers into simple fractions to make it simpler...

    4 1/2 - 8 1/5 =

    (40/10 + 5/10) - (80/10 + 2/10) =

    45/10 - 82/10 =

    (45 - 82) /10

    -37/10

    Now uncombine the mixed numbers....

    - (30/10 + 7/10) =

    -3 7/10

  • If you want to check your work on a simple calculator...

Convert each fraction to a decimal...

    4 1/2 - 8 1/5

    4.5 - 8.2

-3.7 which is the same as -3 7/10
