Stray cat with a black eyeball and matted around eye... anybody know what it is?

We've been feeding this mama cat and her 6 kittens the last month. Her eyes were fine, the other day she came with a matted eye and it looked like stuff leaking out of it. We thought maybe it would go away but now it is worse and her eyeball looks real dark like its black or blood red and you can't see her pupil. Her other eye is fine. Does anybody know what it is and how to treat it without it costing so much or is her life already in jeopardy?

  • OMG! Poor cat. If it is dark it might have had some type of blunt force traume done to it. If she strays at night to play, look for some food or whatever and ppl see her, well, you'd be surprised what cat haters would do to a cat. My cat strayed for a few days and came back with a broken tail.

  • Sounds like either a bad infection or she may have had trauma to her eye. She may be blind in that eye now. If you're able take her to the vet. If not, give it a few days and see if the drainage and matting stops. If she lets you close to her, you could gently wipe around the eye with a warm cottonball....Maybe even rub something like neosporin across the closed lid. But, the best bet will be the Vet. Give him a call.

  • do not rub neosporin across her eyeball how would u like it! it sound like to me she has a infection or trama. if its infection and she'll let u handle her get a plain lipton tea bag and soak it in war water and gentally rub this across her eye and gentley take a q tip or a soft wash cloth and clean away the matted fur. if its trama there isnt much u can do for her unless u want to take her to the vet and have the eye removed if it cant be saved.

  • it sounds like trama to me. if her eye is like that then there was def. something wrong. She should be taken into the vet. If its her pupil that is enlarged it could cause her to die.
