  • yes they might use an iv, depends how bad her infection was and if she needs not just antibiotics but fluids. newborns can lose both weight and fluids very fast.

  • Yes, they would use an IV. My newborn was taken back to the ER at 10 days with a 102.4 fever. It turned out to be a UTI that turned into a bladder infection, that led to a blood infection. We were admitted for 10 days in order to complete the full round of IV antibiotics. FYI, any baby under 6 weeks with a fever that high is automatically admitted to the pediatric unit, at least at my hospital anyway. They will give fluids and the antibiotics, but you would feed the baby regularly (breast or bottle), and the fluid is the minimal amount to keep the IV open.

  • Oh, and BTW, there were no signs. The first we knew there was a problem was the fever. After all, he/she can't really tell you it hurts to pee.

  • Symptoms... fever usually, possible vomiting, cranky baby
Usually just seen on a urine test
And yes many babies are hospitalized for kidney infections... which is pretty much any UTI in an infant and most require several days of antibiotic and if the baby were under 3 months old usually a minimum of a 48 hour stay
