Is Juice A Necessity For A 6 Month Old?

I keep reading about how most 6 months drink around 4 oz of juice a day. I haven't really been giving my son that much a day. Is it really a necessity?

  • Nahhh. I don't give my daughter juice at all. She doesn't need it, I dunno. I don't think it's really necessary.

  • i don't think so unless he needs more fruit/veggies in his diet then it counts as a serving... i think water is more important than juice. I gave my dd juice diluted with water when she was that age

  • I've never given my son juice and he's 10 months. There's no reason for it. Why give babies all that sugar?

Answer by Anonymous at 11:18 AM on Jul. 7, 2009

  • No sugar is never a necessity unless he/she won't eat fruits. My 6 month old daughter eats 1-2 fruits a day, 1-2 vegs a day, and 1-2 grains mixed in something somewhere in-between. (I don't mean 6 meals, i usually mix foods together that makes that total.) She doesn't like to drink water much, and since it's summer time, I don't want her to get over-heated or dehydrated, so if she won't drink water, I'll put a splash of juice in it, and she'll drink about 2-3 oz.

  • I don't give my son juice on a regular basis either. Only occassionally when its super hot out and I want to encourage fluid intake. Otherwise its all formula/breastmilk, yogurt, and water.

  • not a necessity at all. Just make sure she gets enough liquids not to dehydrate. Water is best of course, but some don't like the taste. Add just a touch of juice for flavor.

  • It's not necessary at any age. It's really not needed for babies.

  • No. I never give my kids juice. They just don't need it.
