Cast them toward something and have them come back... like counting the number of windows or doorknobs or cupboards or closets or plants or seats or whatever in the house. Finding three different blue toys, or 5 different size books or to see how long it takes to see a van, a bus, a motorcycle and a car to drive past.
The Mother's Almanac suggested having a Can Can -- a big can (free of sharp edges) that has pieces of paper with simple things a small child Can do... to pull out randomly on a rainy day. Things like playing with water in the bathroom sink, or stacking books, or making a sandwich or counting pennies, or making rubbings, or colouring... the list is super-long in the book, and there are other great books liked 365 Non-TV Things for Kids to Make and Do.
Sorting shoes, matching socks, folding towels, tearing lettuce for dinner, planting seeds, dusting, cleaning the tub (from the inside) Big Fun!
