Have you ever stripped and stained your deck or wooden fence?

We plan to power wash it to get the old stain off and to clean it. How long should we let it "dry" before we stain it?

Then plan to use a semi transparent stain. Any suggestions on how to apply it? Brushes or spray of some type?

Anyone have any other tips?

  • let the wood dry about 3 days if you can. your powerwasher should have a reservoir that you can put bleach in to bleach any mildew or water stains out of the wood also.
if you can rent a paint sprayer i would go with that route on a non-windy day, you'll need thinner to allow the new stain to flow through the nozzle. or wagoner(wagner?) has a great powerpainter you can buy relatively cheap and is easy to use. you may want to go that route since it's your deck and the maintenance will have to be done at least every other year on it.
manual labor is always the cheapest, you can get paint rollers on an extension rod and roll the stain on but it takes alot longer doesn't cover as well and takes all day if not two.
