My tween scratches herself when nervous... could this leave bruises?

My tween (12-year-old girl), has anxiety problems, and so when she feels guilty or nervous or anxious, she scratches herself up like crazy. This is something we're working on. She scratched recently, and it ended up leaving small purple splotches, like when blood vessles break, unlike the normal redness or scab. Is this normal? I've heard it can also be the sign of other things, so pleae answer... Thanks.
