When do you attempt to let your child spoon feed themselves?

My DD is 13 1/2 months, so I am just wondering when we should start practicing

  • whenever they show an interest and start grabbing at the spoon (they will usually gag themselves with it though so don't freak out or it will just scare them) Also I'm not sure who makes it *(maybe Gerber) but they have these "lil' Dippers" Our wal-mart carries them. But they are chunky with a chunky handle and it has grooves in it that picks up food so it doesn't all fall off for your little one like a spoon will and when they put it in their mouth and suck on it they actually get something.

  • i let my dd try using a spoon at about 8 or 9 months, it was messy but she could use one by herself at a year old

  • I started about that time with my son. Although he has some difficulties with the spoon but loves using his fork!!

  • I let kaylee start around 11 months. Gerber has these spoons that are made for beginning feeders, they are great! I let her try with yogurt and applesauce...just be prepared for bath time afterward!

  • we started our dd at around 13 months and now at 19 months she can spoon feed herself. shes still trying to get the hang of stabbing things with her fork.. so we use soons more than forks.

  • Spoon was about 18 months, fork was about 9 months. It's easier to stab food than to scoop it on a spoon.

  • Around 8 months...when they started self feeding table food. I would stick the spoon into whatever they were eating. They would usually get the first bite into their mouths and then just play with the spoon. My youngest was feeding herself with a spoon or fork with little mess by 15 months (even cereal and soup).

  • My 13 month old son loves to use his fork. I think he likes to stab things, LOL, just kidding. I have not introduced a spoon to him yet, only because he has the fork.
