Is the Mormon religion a cult?

Heard someone refer to them as a cult today. I never thought of them as a cult. What do you think and why? Also, are cults ALWAYS a bad thing?

  • I have been born raised and still live in Utah, BTW I am not Mormon never have been never will be! I would say religion because they have good morals and teaching but I say cult because they brain wash there kids!! Ok maybe not literal brain wash but they cant think for themselves they do what the church tells them too. But then again I guess all religions do this so following this logic that means all religions are cults......Hmmmm maybe we should just think for our selves and just teach our kids right from wrong and we wouldnt need religion...........

  • Going by the Webster dictionary definition ( a system of religious beliefs and ritual ), then EVERY religion is a cult :) So its up to you to decide if its a bad thing :)

  • All religions start as cults. Cults, sects, denominations - they're all the same thing, just different sized groups. For people who like to misuse the word and insist cults are evil, no, LDS does not belong there. Neither do JW or Catholic.

  • The thing is some Christian denominations define cults as religions that are too different from their own - and they think they're evil.

So as an LDS person, when I hear someone like this accusing me of being in a cult, I don't feel bothered by it, because I know they're just really saying 'my religion is different from theirs.' and that's okay, because it's true; it is different.

It used to bother me when I thought they were using the same definition I was thinking of - like big suicidal Heaven's Gate or David Koresh stuff. But now I know they're not. So I shrug it off.

and to those who think I'm in an evil cult I just want to say, I still love you.
