When are strawberries the sweetest?

I love strawberries, but almost every time I buy them they're bitter. Is there a way to tell how sweet they'll be by their color?

  • Big isn't always better when it comes to strawberries. Usually the smaller the berry the more flavor and sweetness it has.
Look for berries that are deep red all the way to the tips. Often strawberries are picked when the tips are still green or white and their sugar content is not at 100% as a result. Strawberries do NOT ripen further after they are picked.
Your best bet is to buy from a farmers market from someone that picked the berries just that morning or from a pick-your-own farm. Berries should be deep red to the very tips and firm. There should not be any stems, just the green hulls (a ripe berry "pops" off the stem with little effort).

  • Are you getting them local? Local Strawberries are always the best. The stuff you get from the store that is already prepacked and sent from a far way place, are going to be "bitter" and not that great. Strawberry season, is the first three weeks of june.
