Salvaging spices?

I was given some spices from a friend who was moving and didn't want to pack them.

Well, apparently they got moist at some point, and now they are clumped and difficult to get out of the container.

I would hate to throw them away (its basically her entire spice cabinet - too much to just give up on) is there any way to salvage these spices?

  • If they were wet, they probably have mold. Be safe and throw them away.

  • Throw them out and spices lose flavor after about 6 months after being opened.

  • as long as they haven't molded which most mold wont grow on spices they are fine. They may not have gotten wet it might be that the humidity got to them i have had that happen a lot and if it was from a friend and they were using them they are fine. spices don't go bad and they don't loose flavor that easily if you can smell the spice they still have their flavor. just tap them against the counter to loosen them or use a fork or something pointy to loosen them up.

  • Spices are supposed to be replaced every 6-9 months.
