Am I Legally Entitled To Keep My Placenta?

I'm giving birth at Forest Hills Hospital in NYC, and my doctor said I will not be allowed to take home my placenta. Is this legal?

  • Just curious, why would you want to keep it?
Im not sure they can let you take it home, isnt that considered like a Biohazard?
would they give it to you in a jar?
    no, really?

  • They give it to you in a bag and some people use it for religious purposes, other people eat it.

  • "Im not sure they can let you take it home, isnt that considered like a Biohazard" This is why. The hospital can't chance being sued if something were to happen ,with good reason, people are sue crazy these days. If it's in the hospital policy then it's legal.

If you want to keep it, birth your baby at home or find a hospital that will let you keep it.

  • Well, I have reverence for it and I feel it shouldn't be dumped after being biopsied. And I don't think its a bioharzard because people bring home severed limbs and teeth from the hospital and dentist. I know they give it to you, depending where you birth, but how can they keep it if I want it?
