Have I ruined my babys teeth already!?

I have been breastfeeding my daughter since she was born (15 weeks) and last night I read that you should wipe their gums to prevent tooth decay! I didn't know this and feel like a neglectful mother. Has anyone been through this? Should I be as worried as I am?

  • You haven't ruined her. You should start this young to get them used to it. Just go ahead and start now if you'd like.

  • I never did this with either of my boys. I wouldn't worry until solids are introduced. Breastmilk has antibacterial properties that protect the teeth.

  • I never did this with my son. He has 4 teeth now and we brush them every day.

  • I didn't do it either. I would start to de-sensitize her mouth though now...it will make tooth brushing in the future a little easier.

  • I didn't hear anything about this when my son was little, we only started brushing his teeth as he got them (about 7 months old). We took him for his first dentist visit this year and they said his teeth are perfect.
