How long do I let him cry/scream it out?

He is 5, autistic, and throwing a severe temper tantrum. I tried the usual calming techniques and nothing is working. Finally to keep my sanity and my temper from flaring up.... I put him in his room and shut the door.

He is screaming, snarling, coughing, gagging.... like I said it is serious.

All cuz we had to come home from the pool. Help!

  • If it's a tantrum, then discipline as such.

If it is a meltdown (which my autistic boys are prone to) then you just keep working with the calming techniques.

But a tantrum....discipline as you normally would.

Meltdowns can't be helped...tantrums, they can learn to knock it off. It just takes longer than with the average kid.

  • Let it be for now. Get yourself calm and relaxed first and then go back to it.
    Good luck and hugs mom.
