Stimulus: Millions in grants, tons of scrutiny

"The Office of Legislative Budget Assistant reported last week that $413.6 million made its way to the state [NH] under a list of programs that involve education, highways, environmental, health and human services, energy and law enforcement."

Great, huh? But the kicker is:

"...a total of 50 jobs have been created by the funding, 34 of them full time. The OES will be headed by a director whom Gov. John Lynch has not yet appointed. All five OES jobs are described as full-time temporary positions that will go out of existence in September 2011"

$413 million in stimulus has created 34 permanent jobs in NH (5 of which are jobs to watch the stimulus money)! That sounds SO much better than stimulating the economy by letting taxpayers and business owners keep more of their money to spend! (sarcasm)

What do you think?

  • Yep ! All they had to do back when the housing crisis started to drag everything down was to lower taxes.

They didn't even have to write up new legislation, or actually repeal the current tax code - all they had to do was declare a 6 month or even 3 month "tax holiday". Then, the very first day it went into effect, EVERY paycheck and EVERY business budget would have about15% more money in it. INSTANTLY !!

THAT would have been a stimulus. It would have actually "put" money into the hands of people to prevent job losses.

Instead we got the gov't scooping up MORE money, grinding it through bureaucracies and doling it out to chosen cronies or supporters !

How can citizens defend this action ??? HOW can they approve of, and in 2010 vote for, these politicians? They are either villains, or incompetent idiots!

  • 413 million to create 34 full-time jobs? *snort*

  • It's been reported that the few jobs made so far were done at a cost of about 300,000 apiece. I remember hearing someone say this was projected as what would happen before the bill was signed, Surprise, Surprise.

  • Where are the defenders? This question has been up all day. Why is there nobody to explain how this is working and we just aren't seeing the big picture? It is REALLY quiet in here.
