Prenatal vitamins

Hello!
I just found out I'm pregnant. I haven't gotten in to see my dr. yet. Should I be taking prenatal vitamins? I have taken Folic Acid since February, but not a prenatal vitamin. I'm not sure which one to buy. Does a dr. usually prescribe one when you go for your first prenatal exam? Thanks ladies!

  • Your doc. will give you either options of scripts or they may already have a specific brand that they prescribe. For now just buy one over the counter. Any is better than none.

  • Some types need a prescription, some don't. I have a hard time swallowing pills and actually compared the breakdown on some of the most popular ones with a simple children's chewable. They were nearly identical.
Some doctors write them for every woman. Some ask about your eating habits first. Some only write it if you ask. So don't assume anything and ask if you want them.

  • I get mine at the Walmart pharmacy, 90 day supply and they are $10. They are called Prenatal Plus. Ask your doctor what you need based on what your body needs! Congrats!!

  • I take two children't chewables a day because the prenatals make me sick. It's the same really. Or you could just go and get a regular one a day vitamin. Again, same thing.

  • I was taking a women's one a day prior to getting pregnant and I just continued to take that until I had my first appointment. At my first appointment they gave me a bunch of different samples and then I had an ultrasound scheduled for a week a later. At that appointment I told the midwife which prenatal vitamin I wanted to take and she gave a prescription.

  • I buy mine from Costco - I think it's Nature Made brand. You don't need a prescription, and you should start them asap. Congratulations!
