what are some good tips and ideas for planning a trip

We are going on a small vacation and trying to make it as cheap as possible. We are going to san antonio, tx. We would like a fairly cheap hotel, but not a bad hotel. Please help with some ideas for snacks and meals. We have 5 kids and 2 adults. We want to spend 3 nights but if our budget only allows for 2 then thats okay also.

  • Try not to eat out very often, most hotels have a small refrigerator in them so take things to make sandwiches and chips and dip. you can also get fruits and veggies for snacks.

  • I look for hotels on expedia or then I go to the hotel's website and see if the cost is less expensive. It worked for a place in CA. A lot of places like Super 8, Days Inn give a free breakfast of sorts. Usually some danishs, toast, coffee, but a couple of places had a nice array of breakfast foods.

  • Try for a place with a kitchenette- small refrigerator, microwave, maybe a sink. Call first to see what they have, sometimes you can arrange for them to be placed in your room. You'll probably want a suite or connecting rooms. If you eat out at lunch prices are usually cheaper, then you can save money by eating breakfast and supper in- or buying sandwiches for supper. Even if the place has a refrigerator (so you can bring milk and juice) you may need to bring your own bowls and utensils. I have some thin plastic bowls that I bring, and some microwavable plastic cups. If you stay in a place that includes breakfast, that would be a savings. Look online for San Antonio to see what is offered there, museums and so forth. sometimes you can get a discounted pass for several museums.

  • We just booked a four star hotel for three nights for $85 a night! Use I swear it is amazing the deals that you can get on that site. They won't tell you the name of the hotel until you book it, only the star rating and the amenities (like if it has a pool or something). Three stars are like a Holiday Inn. You could probably get a three star place for like $65 a night.

  • Oh just checked it out and has some great deals on hotels too. About $70 for 3 stars.

You could save on meals by bringing some deli meats and peanut butter along in a cooler. Then you can have sandwiches for lunch. It should also be pretty easy to find inexpensive places for breakfast.

What is the age range for your kids? If you have a couple little ones they can certainly share meals too.
