Any reason why a toddler shouldn't eat ice?

My 15 mo. old recently discovered ice (we just moved to Arizona and when she's in a hot car...she loves eating ice to keep cool). Are there any downsides? I only give her small pieces. She sucks on it - doesn't chew.

  • It can be bad for your teeth no matter what age if you chew it. If she isn't chewing it I would just watch to make sure she doesn't choke.

  • I think I remember hearing that it can hurt their teeth if they chew it.

  • It can break the enamel off her teeth, if the chunks are big enough for her to really chomp on.
