What is your grammar pet peeve?

My number one has to be errant apostrophes.

I saw this: "also help's to instill team work and compeitive skill's" in a post here on CM and it made me cringe. Why do people think that they need an apostrophe when conjugating a verb or with a plural noun?! Helloooo first grade grammar!!!

Additionally, it drives me nuts when people misuse (or erroneously omit altogether!) the apostrophe with plural possessive nouns. "Ladie's room"?? "Kids play area"??

Oh, and don't even get me started on "its" vs. "it's" and "your" vs. "you're"!

  • the misuse of there, their, and they're. I have horrible grammar most of the time but for some reason those three words used in the wrong context drives me insane.

  • Hands down my biggest peeve would be double negatives. I will immediately judge when someone uses one. "I don't have no more" OMG. Awful.

Misspellings, extra apostrophes and using the wrong "your" could always possibly be a typo if someone is typing too fast and not proofreading, but a double negative is never a typo, its just bad bad bad grammar.

  • Stuff like misusing there, their, and they're. Also, lose and loose. I'm not a huge grammar nazi, but I think you can tell a lot by the way a person spells ( or fails to use spell checker). Its not hard; its right on the editor! I also think it's especially rude when someone is saying something about another person's intelligence, and their post is full of errors! But that's just me :)

  • Anon, I am not criticizing posters on CM for their typos. I simply was asking what grammatical errors irritate other "grammar nazis" (such as myself) out there!

Mad, I don't really consider that kind of thing a grammatical issue. I see those as legitimate CafeMom abbreviations.

  • My husband can't stand it when I correct the kids (and him) on the use of me or I. Adam and I are going to the store. NOT Me and Adam are going to the store. I hate it! It really drives me crazy! He says "nobody talks that way." I respond with "I speak correctly and my children will learn to speak correctly, too."
