  • If the liquid is clear you can't really tell the difference. If you felt any kind of gush or just noticed a larger amount then usual then you need to contact your doctor right away. And if your stomach is getting very hard and then a few minutes or even seconds later is getting soft, you are having contractions and forget about calling, go straight to the hospital. I am pregnant myself and have gone through the same thing.

  • One thing you can do, and this sounds gross is to smell it. IF it smells sweet it's amniotic fluid, but if it smells like amonia, or something bitter then it's not......the best thing to do if you are in doubt is to call your DR or go to the hospital and they will test it with a test strip to determine if it is or isn't. I know the closer to the end you get, the more discharge you get.

  • Another way you can tell is to just wait. If it's a constant slow leak then it's more likely to be fluid and you should have it checked. If it seems to come and go, if it has texture or color to it, or if it smells then it's probably just discharge. Amniotic fluid will not leave stains or smudges in your underwear when it dries, either, but discharge sometimes will.

  • You can go to the doctor or the ER. They will dip a little piece of paper in a sample of the fluid. That's all there is to it.
