ALBANY, N.Y. — Five major pharmacy chains agreed Tuesday to print drug instructions at their New York stores in five languages other than English and indicated that they plan to expand the option to other states.

The companies are Target, Wal-Mart, Costco, Duane Reade and A&P. The agreements will also require the companies to provide oral assistance in more than 150 languages.

The companies, which together have 700 stores in New York state, agreed with state Attorney General Andrew Cuomo to counsel and provide written translations in Spanish, Chinese, Italian, Russian and French.

The companies didn't agree to Polish translations, although other pharmacies agreed to that in previous deals with the attorney general.

  • Just another government idea that cannot be sustained. You know these stores had to have been offered something. They would not agree to something so expensive on their own. Those stores are only out for one thing. Profits. Anyway you look at it , it will cost us money.

  • So strange that they would allow for over 150 languages, yet exclude Polish. I wish the article had explained that further. It makes me wonder how they're going to be able to handle a job that size.

Still great that they're printing drug information in different languages.

  • Great! Also, to the pp, it sounds like they did not agree to the polish written translations, likely because there is not as much demand.

  • If people would learn ENGLISH when they come here, this kind of crap wouldn't be necessary. I wonder if I were to go to China, would I be expected to learn Chinese or would the whole country cater to me?

    Only in America...
