How come you cant donate blood for a year after getting a tattoo?

I read where after you get a tattoo your not allowed to donate blood for a year. Im just curious as to why this is?

  • hepititas and any other diseases that can be transmitted into your blood stream. Some people get many stds that way because they used a dirty needle

  • It actually depends on where you live. In AR, you can donate as long as you got your tattoo in an actual tattoo parlour, because they are regulated here. Meaning, they're watched closely to ensure you have very little chance of catching Hepatitis or any other nasty disease. There are several states that are like that. In other states, they're not so regulated and the Red Cross makes you wait. If you get a tattoo from, say a friend in their home, you have to wait no matter where you live.
