Do you think a 2550 sq. ft bilevel is big enough for a family of 4?

We're building a house and they just finished framing it and it looks tiny.

  • Way more than enough lol. We are a family of 5 (2 adults, 2 preteen boys, and my 5 year old daughter) and we live in a house about 1400 sq ft. We have 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a living/dining room, and kitchen. Don't NEED anything else. When we lived off base, we had a 1960 sq ft home that was way big enough for our family of 5. I would LOVE to have a house over 2000 sq ft for us lol.

  • Probably. I've looked at houses when it was just the frame and I think they've all looked tiny. It'll look bigger when everything is in it.

  • It should be big enough, trust me when you have to clean it, it's not going to seem so tiny. I live in a 1100 sq. ft. home and it is just my son and I, plenty of room!

  • Should be fine. We have 2900 sq ft there are only 3 of us and we are swimming in space. We have triplets on the way so our home will be filled up soon enough.lol

The average American house size has more than doubled since the 1950s; it now stands at 2,349 square feet. Whether it's a McMansion in a wealthy neighborhood, or a bigger, cheaper house in the exurbs, the move toward ever large homes has been accelerating for years.

Consider: Back in the 1950s and '60s, people thought it was normal for a family to have one bathroom, or for two or three growing boys to share a bedroom.

  • Our house is only 1600 sq ft and there are 7 of us. I know it sounds tiny, but I love it. We have less stuff, we HAVE to spend alot of time together, and we clean it really quickly. I recently just took the tv out of our house. It took a while but now you should see them playing cards, chess, and board games. They are learning how to get along with one another, that is for sure. But yeah, you will be more than fine. Good Luck, and enjoy your new home.
