Emergency sub for veg oil! Quick!

I need to make a box cake and have no time to run back to the store. Can I use veg. shortening melted? what about melted butter? I have a tiny bit of veg oil can I mix it with one of the others I mention?

  • melt the shortening and use whatever amount the recipe asks for.
    A healthy substitute is applesauce.

  • I wish I had bought that apple sauce! I looked at it! So I guess I'm safe using a little veg oil I have and butter melted to equal the yield then?

  • Either melted shortnening or melted butter will work. I usually use butter instead of veg oil anyway, it adds great flavor.

  • Applesauce is a great substitue when baking. Makes the cake or brownies low fat!!
