Car Got Repo'd- Now What?!?

In my state, it is illegal for the repo guy to take your car if you tell him not to take it. Well, this guy did anyway. Now we have no transportation for dh to work, or in a week for the girls to get to school. Things got a little out of hand with moving and deposits on stuff, and we fell behind with our payment, but they are acting like we were trying to steal the stupid car! They say we can't get it back without paying the remainder of the note, plus repo fees and whatever, which comes out to almost $9000, more than our original loan! What can we do at this point? Will we be able to do a 'right to cure'?

  • You should buy a new car, a very economical one with extremely low payments. There are many good deals right now.

  • Are you certain about the law?

Is there public transit in your area?

  • OP here: No- we are in a very rural area, and there aren't even any taxi services nearby! I'm losing my mind here!

  • They had a right to repo it. You should have made some kind of payment instead of none at all. Buy a clunker out right, no loan, until you get on your feet.

  • This happened to a couple I know in 2000. You cant get the car back unless you pay in full. They went and got a new automobile and financed it quick before the repo showed up on their credit. They then went and filed bancruptcy quickly so they didnt owe for the old car and got to keep the new car so he could go to work. The car they got was alot cheaper than their repoed car. Although bancruptcy is bad you can recover from it they even have their own home now.
