  • Not Twilight because after reading HP, they will find the writing level of that series very immature, the plot less than thrilling and the romace absurd.

I would suggest The Inheritance series by Christopher Paolini, Atemis Fowl by Eoin Colfer and the Earthsea series by Ursula K. Le Guin.

  • The Miles Vorkosigan series by Bujold is science fiction adventure. It is not about children, though.

  • The Patricia Wrede series Dealing with Dragons, The Trouble with Dragons, Searching for Dragons. We read them before Harry came out. We loved them. Then we were looking for another series and thought we would give Harry a try. They were awesome.
