Are you suppose to give a baby water?

And if so when do you start? And what kind of water? Tap? Bottled? Boiled tap? That nursery water stuff with added floride?

  • NO water til 6 months, its up to what kind to give but no more than a few ounces after that..its not needed breastmilk and formula have moer than enough water.

Water to a child under 6 months can cause water intoxication and kill them

  • Nah, babies don't need water for at least the first six months because they get it from formula or breastmilk. And after six months, try not to give them anything with fluoride. Too much fluoride can cause fluorosis, a health condition that causes permanent staining of the teeth.

  • No. They don't need it all. Ivy started drinking water regularly around a year. Bottled. NOT that stuff with added flouride.

  • Things have changed so much over the years, I can tell because the first three comments said no water. But,I always gave my babies and grand-babies water, I would sterilize the water and bottles, and give the baby 1-2 ounces, the water also helps dissolves the white coating that some babies get on their tongues before they get thrush.

  • A big giant NO. Giving water before 6 months old can even cause seizures. I started introducing a sippy cup with water at about 7 months old.

  • Water gives seizures now, where do yal come up with this stuff, and please don't tell me you read this in a book, this is plain nonsense. So you telling me all my children and grand-kids had seizures. I said no they didn't. Please new mothers ask your mothers and grand-moms questions like this. Also, you don't have to buy special water for your baby either, just boil it first.

  • lol, I just had to respond after reading Anonymous notes. That makes absolutely no sense that water would cause seizures, but I don't think they really need it either. They get everything they need from formula or breast milk.
