DVD scratches

My kids own several DVDs. Over the years many of them have become scratched only to lead to tears because they can not watch them without skipping. I googled and found different products that promise to work, but then thought better of it and perhaps someone else might be able to give me their opinions and stories (hopefully success stories) about removing these scratches. PLEASE. I hate to go out and buy new DVDs that we have already purchased.
