How does housing work in a communist government? Just curious..

Ok, from what I understand in a communist government, the country is basically like a big commune where the government owns everything and there is no private ownership.

How is housing determined? Are you just assigned one, kind of like in the military?

Just curious!

  • yes, houses are assigned to people from their workplace. The government determines what types of housing you get based on your family needs, how long you worked for wherever you are working etc. My family lived in a two bedroom apartment. But keep in mind, the government is not assigning mansions to some ppl and small apartments to other ppl. All housings are relatively similar.

Right! Some of us have studied communist countries. There is still a "class system." It is just decided by the government and not by hard work on the part of the indvidual. In the USSR the "cream" lived well. Good food and nice housing while the peasants often lived in 1 or 2 room hovels and gratefully ate the bread when the "cream" saw fit to open the bakery.

older and I disagree on many issues but her answer on this was right on.

  • Actually, even though most are given housing through their work they still pay rent. Everything is included from utilities to appliances. Also houses and apts. can be bought in China and many other countries if one wishes.

40% of europeans live in govt housing 30% live in rentals and in the US 1.3% live in gov housing. Big difference.

  • I have a friend who is a doctor in Germany. She says it's unlikely she will ever own a home. She is looking at moving to the US or Australia. Another friend from Germany said she never hoped to own her own home until she came to the US. Both have said most people rent.

The US has a dream of everyone owning their own home. Many of my friends own two. Very different.
