There are many people with mental illnesses....not to mention babies up until a certain age...who do not have self-awareness. I think self-awareness is heightened intelligence and nothing more. Dolphins and chimps are also self-aware. They recognize themselves in mirrors.
I see what you mean metalcowgirl, that's a good point. But I feel that even infants, or people who have an illness that affects their mind, have an of awareness of who they are at some level. Same goes for the more intelligent animals. In other words I see spirit as pure energy, while soul is the pure energy that condenses into individual perception, thought and creativity. But, as far as I'm concerned, both soul and spirit are eternal. :)
