How often should I bathe my newborn?

I was reading a poll on another site earlier and it got me to wondering...How often does everyone bathe their newborn? We have been wiping down with a washcloth twice a day (still waiting on the cord to fall off), which I am now thinking might be a bit much because he getting really dried out. Several people responded to that poll that they only bathe their newborn every few days. We have been having such issues with his diapers leaking that I can't imagine not bathing him this much.. hopefully this leaky diaper issue works itself out soon. Almost every diaper change, means a change in clothing too.

  • once the cord came off i gave my baby a bath every night, and continued this now, every night, calm play, bath, bottle bed....he now knows this and gets him right into sleep mode. So i do it for that purpose, and I like a fresh baby, I like to be clean everyday, why wouldnt a baby? lol..and he leaks all the time so i feel he needs it.

  • once or twice a week..too much isn't good for the baby, they don't really get dirty, they don't do anything but sleep. And if they do get dirty, baby wipes are the best

  • Every few days. Have you tried switching diaper brands to stop the leaking? Or changing sizes? If you are using baby wipes, he shouldn't need a bath or wipe down just because he pooped, you know? Baby wipes do a great job, even the sensitive ones!

  • ive been bathing my newborn every day since i brought him home, when i used just a wash cloth and since ive started giving him real baths. his skin doesnt get dried out because i put lotion all over him after every bath. and he loves his baths. he has so much fun so i think its great to do it every day.
