Just found out that DS is allergic to peanuts by giving him peanut butter...what other foods should we avoid?

I am assuming that it was peanut butter anyway, we took him to the ER and they gave him benadryl. Rash went away and he is asleep like the baby that he is. DS is 13 months.

Have you found that there are peanuts in any food you didnt suspect it in? Neither one of us has allergies in our family history so we werent expecting this. We would like to be very cautious so any tips would be appreciated! THANKS!

  • Beside the post Bridget linked, I found Peanut Parent group to be quite helpful on cafemom. The most obvious, peanuts, peanut butter, peanut oil, peanut flour.

  • my son is allergic too. go to an allergist and get an epi-pen...it can save his life. read every label, anything with nuts or peanuts, AVOID! even be careful with baked-goods, because most of the time everything is manufactured with same untensils and equipment. if you live within driving distance to CHOP, i highly recommend going there. good luck!

  • You really should have him tested for allergies. If he is allergic he will need an epi pen in case of accidental exposure, you'll be able to find out how severe his allergy is, if he is allergic to just peanuts or other nuts as well. And if it wasn't the pb, if he's allergic to something else you should know so you can avoid that allergen. Get a referral to an allergist and find out for sure what is going on.

  • Lima beans are in the same food group as peanuts. My BIL is allergic to peanuts, and lima beans are mildly irritating to him also.

  • Oh, and peanuts are in a lot of things you wouldn't think, and if he's really badly allergic a lot of foods that don't actually have peanuts in them are made in places where nuts are processed and that could trigger an allergic reaction.
