What causes gray hairs?

I'm starting to believe that it really is kids, or at least being pregnant. It seems like the "explosion" of gray correlates with me being pregnant when they happen.

  • It turns gray because the follicle loses pigment, and doesn't produce color anymore. For some it starts happening with age. Others with kids. It's also a stress thing. But then other times, you start "premature" graying. My sister started getting grey hairs at 13. A lady I know has had a FULL head of grey hair at 16, and so has my dad. There's not a particular thing that causes it. It just happens.

  • Mythic, you're not *too* far off. Post-partum, we do lose a lot of hair. And it can happen that pigment production ceases. I had only three gray hairs when I became pregnant. Post-partum, 50% gray.
