How do I get my son to sleep?

My son is two and a half, and getting him to sleep is a battle. He will sleep in our bed, but as soon as he touches his, he screams and cries. If we try to "let him cry it out" he throws up...then we have that to clean plus a sleep baby. Help!!

  • you mean if he falls asleep and you move him he wakes up?
if not let him fall asleep in your bed then move him to his after he's been asleep long enough to be totally out.
if you mean if you move him he wakes up, maybe sit in the room w/him, make sure the atmosphere is the same (lights, noise, temp etc..) in his room as it is in yours. and lay down next to his bed til he falls asleep.

  • We've tried everything...letting him fall asleep somewhere else then moving him to his bed, letting him go to sleep in his bed (which generally ends in screaming and cleaning for me) - it's almost like he's afraid to be alone, even though we have a night light and we are next door. We have a baby monitor, so we can hear everything that happens.

  • does he talk well yet? if so ask him why he doesn't want to be in his room. it may be theres a "monster" under the bed or something simple like that you can "fix" nightly. (just don't put the idea there if its not already)
and do you want him out of your room or in his own bed? maybe you could move the bed into your room for a month or so til he's used to being in it then try to move it back into his room.

  • There is a FANTASTIC article on transitioning from the family bed over on drjaygordon.com.
