The president's daughters get healthy school lunches, Why don't I ?

White House Objects to Poster That Invokes Obama Children
The posters went up last week, 14 in Union Station. On each of the large displays, a thought bubble rises up from a picture of a beautiful 8-year-old: "President Obama's daughters get healthy school lunches. Why don't I?"

A Washington nonprofit that advocates nutrition-policy reform paid $20,000 to get its message across and carefully maneuvered Metro's tangle of regulations to display its posters. Metro gave it a go -- but the White House did not, according to the group. Within 24 hours of the signs' appearance, the White House asked the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine to take down the ads, which feature Jasmine Messiah, a vegetarian who attends a Miami-Dade County public school that, she says, offers no vegetarian or vegan lunch options.

  • either way, i think one its crap to put up pictures of anyones kids like that no matter who's kids they are. they are kids period and should be allowed to be so as much as possible.
as for people upset about school lunches, send your kid with a packed lunch then.

  • my parents didn't get me school lunches most of the time, it's not exactly news that they're crap. some schools even serve fast food.

why bring up Obama's kids? what proof is there that their lunches are from their school? even if they are, it's a private school.

  • I'm not a vegan, but I do think the school should offer that lunch option. The kids with alleries get an alternative option.
The ad is grabbing national attention by mentioning the Obama girls. They are not pictured IN the ad, so I don't see the problem. That lil girl model is adorable.

  • Ok...so the SCHOOL that OBAMA is able to send his children too offers all theses special/healthy alternatives....how come PUBLIC school doesn't? Bteter?  Saaying the same thing without saying Obamas girls. Woo freakin Hoo. Its further proof of Obama speaking out of both sides of his face.

He wants to spread the wealth...as long as HE and HIS don't have to settle. Just like with Health care...WE will get one ins..HE and Congress will get another.

  • oh and once again I would like to point out that the OBAMA'S had those girls on the cover of every magazine and tabloid when he was running for office and after he won. WHO was putting the kids out there?? At least this ad doesn't show their faces.

AND once again..BUSH'S daughters were NOT off limits.  the media had a Field day whenever they had a teenage screw up...like these media people were perfect when THEY were teenagers :/

  • Obama's kids are not in a public school. Public schools do provide relatively healthy options (they have to by law), but they can't be as fancy as those at a private school because the money isn't there. If people are willing to pay more taxes so that uber-healthy, complete lunches are served, then schools can start offering them. As it is, parents are only willing to pay a certain amount of money out of their own pockets for school lunches; anything beyong that would be covered by the schools (ie the taxpayers). If you don't like the options, you can send your child to school with a lunch of your choice.

  • Umm aren't the Pres kids in private school? Don't ALL private schools pretty much have better food options than public schools?

    What drivel...

  • Bottom line....because Obama (well actually us, the taxpayers!) pay extra for the privilege!!! Public schools from education to fitness and nutrition offer the BASICS--state mandated BASICS--no more, no less! If you want MORE, you have to pay MORE!

See that's the beauty of capitalism--if you really want it, you can have it--but it takes some real effort and advanced planning!!! With socialism it's a "one size fits all approach." While that may look good on paper (more so for those who don't have much), in practice, it's not what this country will really want--but by the time it happens, IF it happens, it'll be too late to say...I want what we used to have!!!
