Can I start my own little pre-school?

I live in Hawaii, and it's time to start thinking about preschool for my daughter. The cost is outrageous; minimum $650/month. We just cannot do it, no way.
My MIL had an interesting idea: that I could get a few friends' kids Lily's age together, and have an in-home pre-school for them all, which would save us all tons of money and be some income for me as well.
Can I do that? Do I need any special training? Daycare certification?
Do any of you currently run an in-home pre-school?

  • Laws on that vary by state. You'd need to check your local regulations.

I mean... you can get together with friends and do your own little "preschool" - no problem there, but actually calling it a "preschool" and charging for it? Could get sticky there... not sure.
