  • Fundal height measurements are only approximations. It is NOT an exact science. The numbers mean very little unless there is a SERIOUS and OBVIOUS fluctuation from your personal growth pattern.

Fundal height depends on the size of the woman, how much she weighs, how her uterus tilts, the length of her torso, the position of the baby, and more importantly depends on the PERSON doing the measurement.

The effacment and dialation numbers also mean very little. It's a teaching tool and something to write on the chart. Women can walk around for WEEKS dialated and effaced and another woman can not dialate or efface at all until the very last moment DURING labor.

So, the bottom line? Ingore the numbers. You aren't a number. You are a variation of normal.

  • ask your doctor. they'd tell you or their looks would tell if if something were or could be wrong.

  • Oh, and after the 2nd trimester...fundal height measurments are notoriously inaccurate. We don't all grow the same way, we aren't built the same way, and babies don't grow according to numbers on a chart. The numbers on the chart are averages and guestimations. That means some must be smaller and some must be bigger. All normal okay?
