Why put such a radical into power?

A summary of Dr. Emanuel's tract reads:

Allocation of very scarce medical interventions such as organs and vaccines is a persistent ethical challenge. We evaluate eight simple allocation principles that can be classified into four categories: treating people equally, favouring the worst-off, maximizing total benefits, and promoting and rewarding social usefulness. No single principle is sufficient to incorporate all morally relevant considerations and therefore individual principles must be combined into multiprinciple allocation systems. We evaluate three systems: the United Network for Organ Sharing points systems, quality-adjusted life-years, and disability-adjusted life-years. We recommend an alternative systemthe complete lives systemwhich prioritizes younger people who have not yet lived a complete life, and also incorporates prognosis, save the most lives, lottery, and instrumental value principles.

  • The problem for President Obama is that this is not something Emanuel said in casual conversation. It is available for any one who would like to see it in print. (See below.) So even as Prof. Emanuel backs away from the written statement, saying that his thinking has "evolved" on the question of rationing care to benefit the stronger members of society while denying care to the weaker ones, it has caused more apprehension about the Democrats health care reform efforts.

  • 2mothers you are completely wrong, and a quick (unbiased) summary of Emmanuel will show that the man works against euthanasia and has dedicated his life to improving care for people. You are the one spinning here. Before you start yelling about your quote, and what it sounds like to me is an excerpt to a lengthy medical ethics book. None of what he says in that quote supports the assertion that he is a radical.
