Good recipe for a roast in the slow cooker?

So i've had my slow cooker for over a year now (wedding gift) and i've never used it. I realize it cant be hard. i get the basics of it. veggies, meat, fluid (such as water or broth) of some kind. and let it cook for a day. ...But does anyone have any tips or anything? I just bought a roast and i plan on throwing in the slow cooker in a few days.

  • One 5 lb. beef roast (for smaller roast, adjust other ingredients' quantities accordingly)
    3 carrots, peeled and chopped into bite-size portions
    3 potatoes, peeled and chopped into bite-size portions
    2/3 of a 750mL bottle of dry red wine
    1 cup beef broth (we used bouillon)
    1 tbsp. garlic
    Olive oil
    Salt and pepper

    Simmer on low for 8 hours
