# how many cups of 1 lb of brown sugar be?

Asked by Anonymous at 4:24 PM on Aug. 18, 2009 in Food & Drink

• When I googled it I found everything from 2 1/4 to 2 1/2 cups and in between. even one that said 2 3/4 cups.
http://www.joyofbaking.com/sugar.html says 2 1/4 cups, and this is the most common answer, so I am thinking it is probably accurate. I actually got out a box I have in my pantry, and it doesn't say. Your best bet is to measure it.

• Adding to my above reply: The website said it is 2 1/4 cups packed.

• all of the above sound good to me. Technically 2 cups but if it's packed it would end up being more in weight.

• y'all are confusing weight and volume, which is why we should've switched to metric in the 80's, dammit.

16oz (1lb) by weight is not the same as 16oz (2 cups) by volume.
