  • They could find out without spying on citizens by public debate, auto. They don't have to go behind the backs of private citizens and ask their neighbors to 'snitch' on them and provide the WH the non-supporters email. People are free to think what they want. We are a free society and govt. has no right to assume they have the power to tell free thinkers what they will think and repeat.

To answer the question, OP, they all seem to be pro debate, of course until their own agenda is on the chopping block, then all bets are off. Nobody likes to be on the defensive. Too bad the current administration's reaction is to call citizens racists, AstroTurf and in some cases terrorists just for having the gall to disagree.

  • I haven't read 1984 since high school, but I want to read it again--it's scary how close we've gotten to Orwell's vision.

  • Yes good thread. I've read 1984 several times and did a thesis on his book in college. It's a depressing book on the future, one of the reasons being the author's own experience - he was dying a painful death from cancer at the time. The torture in "room 101" was supposedly a renaction of the painful cancer treatement he was undergoing (without the rats).

Funny thing both political extremes use the phrase "1984" as a rallying cry to there cause. I'm am

  • I'm am sure we will get our fair share of posts saying "Bush is Big Brother". Actually, Orwell's target was communism and socialism, he was a product of WW2 and the cold war. His target was the lack of individualism, lack of freedom of thought. A future where the ability to even think freely and completely was being phased out, not only due to survelience and enforcement, but constant propoganda and an actual redefinition of vocabulary so that certain words no longer existed. He based this on Stalin's many 5 year plans where the goals were never accomplished, yet Stalin simply stated enough times that they were and people believed it.

  • Yes I beleive we Europe is heading to an Orwellian future with it's trend toward "social democracy" - the concentration on the needs of the many at the expense of a personal identity and personal freedoms, and the growth of a larger central government ("Big Brother"). Lets hope it does not progress here in the U.S.

  • I believe that what is happening and what is going to happen in the near future was set into motion YEARS AGO! anyone else notice that the last 4 presidents went to the same college, were members of the same secret society and all have been photographed doing masonic signs with their hands? Of course they don't want a debate, they don't care what we have to say about anything! It is their way, their rules and we have to sit down and take it or we are considered domestic terrorists.

  • Obama is a puppet.... nothing more.....he does what he is told to do and everyone was blinded by his charming way.... well not me... I seen him for what he really was when he couldn't answer a simple question and would stumble over his lying words because it wasn't something that was written for him on a a paper to read....
