  • Oh, bad idea. Let the hiccups go away on their own. Babies get hiccups ALL THE TIME.

  • No sugar water! Just let it go away, hiccups are a natural occurance and should't be messed with.

  • Definitely not. Hiccups are nothing to be worried about.

  • No way. try giving a bottle. or if you breastfeed let them nurse for a min. that always gets rid of DD's hiccups. or just let them pass like others said...its totally normal for them to get them a lot.

  • If your baby is like mine, waiting for the hiccups to go away on their own will be torture for both of you. My little girl HATED the hiccups and would scream and scream!

Go ahead and try sugar water. Just dissolve about a teaspoon of sugar in about a 1/4 cup of water and give her a teaspoon of it with an oral syringe - most baby medicines come with a syringe you can use. The prohibition against giving water to babies applies to giving it to them to drink instead of milk. The prohibition against sugar is to keep them from developing a taste for sweets and for giving the empty calories. A teaspoon now and then won't do any harm.

The sugar water trick didn't work for us. I ended up trying Gripe Water and that did the trick. She's 23 months now and while the hiccups don't bother her much, Gripe Water still gets rid of them! You can find it at lots of stores - Longs Drugs, BabiesRUs, and online at Amazon,, etc. We use Baby's Bliss.

  • I usually just give my baby a sip of water and it never hurt her. Her doctor said not to give them a cup of water until they are at least 6 mths old, but a little sip to get rid of hiccups if fine.

  • The hiccups are actually the babys body strengthening the lungs especially if your child is not a loud and long crier. Normal and not a problem. What a great mom you are to be concerned!
