CIA hired Blackwater to kill terrorists, OK to sub-contract this?

The CIA hired private contractors at Blackwater USA in 2004 as part of a secret program to kill top-level members of al-Qaida, a person familiar with the program said Wednesday.

The contracts, which were unsuccessful, were canceled several years ago, the person told The Associated Press. He spoke on condition of anonymity because the program remains classified.

The Times, citing unidentified current and former government officials, said Blackwater executives helped with planning, training and surveillance for the program. The program never resulted in the capture or killing of any terrorists suspects, according to current and former U.S. intelligence officials. It was never fully operational, and was canceled by then-CIA Director George Tenet. It was restarted by his successor, Porter Goss, and canceled again this June by CIA Director Leon Panetta.

  • Did they EVER kill anyone??? From what I understand from morning Joe (that's right msnbc...please accuse THEM of right bias!) NO ONE was. This was an idea that was proposed, some training happened...THEN they PULLED THE PLUG. BEFORE anyone was contracted out to kill. Soooooo...it seems to me they did what Obama isn't.....for once. They weighed all the option and chose against. What exactly are you mad about....that they DIDN'T kill anyone or that they tried an idea that they thought might protect us against terrorists and when they found it inadvisable, pulled the plug?

  • So what's the beef? Isn't this like rendition? So it's only okay to sub-contract killing to companies in other countries? Isn't rendition something Obama is ok with using?

  • Anon :24 SHOW me where Obama said he was specifically "okay with Rendition"

Oh and did you even follow the link? That isn't what this is about.

Sweets this blackwater stuff is C-R-A-Z-Y. So now they weren't just security, weren't just acting on their own accord killing Muslims and carrying out their own version of the crusades, but NOW we find out the were brought on as contract killers? Contracted by who? The CIA.

    Where does it end?

It was unsuccessful, but the government gave a contract to a private company to KILL people. and to THAT company shows lack of judgement to say the least  ..but a bigger question, the torture interrogations were also sun-contracted......That's ok? What is out military for?

  • I cant say I blame the CIA...Blackwater is better equipted and trained then alot of our military because its privately funded. They have better equipment and better access to the things they need to survive these missions.
Also I dont see what the deal is in them being hired to take out people plotting things like 9/11 against our country. They arent just going after random muslims they see, there were sepecific targets and reasons behind those targets.
Geez people , you do not have all the information. Just because you THINK you have the right to all the info dosen't mean you do
