Why do they always tell you to drink more water when you are retaining fluid and swelling up?

  • Because it helps regulate you. If you are dehydrated your body tends to HOLD onto more water which makes swelling much worse -- especially in pregnan women because they have developed a much higher blood volume and so need more water. Drinking water signals your body that it is okay to release the water it is holding onto because it will get enough.
